Back in 1991, a dream took shape in the hearts of John and Patty Urlaub right here in Rochester, NY. That dream? To introduce our beloved city to the wonders of craft beer. Inspired by the quaint charm of Rohrbach, Germany, John and Patty embarked on a journey that would forever change our local beer scene.
Their story began in the historic German House on Gregory Street, and today, it unfolds across two thriving locales—the bustling brewery and beer hall on Railroad St. in downtown Rochester and the inviting Buffalo Road Brewpub Restaurant in Gates.
Despite the remarkable growth they’ve experienced over the past 25 years, one thing has remained constant—their unwavering commitment to their roots.
Today, as you explore Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, or the beautiful surrounding areas of Upstate NY, you’re bound to encounter the unmistakable flavor of Rohrbach beer. Unearthing the Origins of the Irish Mafia’s Brewing Legacy
Within the shadowy tapestry of organized crime in America lies a tale as intriguing as it is mysterious. Meet the Irish Mafia, the nation’s oldest and most enigmatic underground syndicate. While their history is veiled in secrecy, one story has emerged, shedding light on their intriguing world.
At the turn of the 20th century, an enigmatic brewer known only as “Willy of Cork” was abruptly plucked from his home in the dead of night. Transported to Belfast, he found himself on a boat bound for Boston, heralding a remarkable chapter in his life. On board lay small-batch brewing equipment and the enigmatic “Willy of Cork.”
The Irish Mafia, passionate about wealth, love, tattoos, family, and hidden alliances, had one true love – crafting exceptional beer. They took an audacious gamble by kidnapping Willy, and their risk paid off. Faced with surrendering his cherished recipes or a grim fate, Willy chose to share his secrets, rising to prominence within the Irish Mafia.
However, this era couldn’t last forever…
In 1926, a rival mafia gang launched a daring raid in pursuit of the coveted beer recipes. Yet, the indomitable Irish Mafia proved invincible. Though fatally wounded by Erin, the rival gang’s leader, Willy had hidden his recipes, sealing their fate.
90 years later, the long-lost recipes were found, and Irish Mafia Brewing Company was born. Irish Mafia’s mission is to share Willy’s legacy, starting in New York, and reunite it with our brethren in Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston, and beyond.
